The “booster” is a repeater – it repeats the signal it receives. In order for the repeated signal to be good, it has to receive a good signal. So you have 2 problems:

1) A wifi repeater. You’ll have to get a Linksys or Buffalo wireless router and flash dd-wrt firmware into it, giving it the ability to be a repeater. (Or spend a lot more to get less.) (You’ll also have to learn how to configure a repeater (there are tutorials all over the web).

2) You’ll have to locate this repeater where it can get a good signal from your wireless router, and where you can get a good signal from it, maybe around the middle of the house.

Locating your current router in the middle of the house is an easier solution.

Range boosters are basically just routers – they listen for an incoming packet, then they retransmit it. It’s their location that makes it work – they receive a strong signal, then transmit it to a computer close enough to the range booster to receive a strong signal (and the same thing for the signal from the computer to the router). If the range booster is where the computer is, receiving a weak signal, it won’t do anything. If you’re listening to the radio, and the signal is full of static, making it louder won’t make it easier to understand – the static gets louder too.

There are devices called regenerators – that receive a weak signal, dig the data out of the noise, clean it up, and retransmit the now clean data. It’s cheaper to have someone come out to the house and run cable from your router to your room. And buy a car with the change.
