I need to know more about this yagi wifi kit and what kind of range can you get even if there are buildings in the way. I need to know if it will reach a sourse that is a quarter of a mile away. The kit itself says up to a mile but I wonder how well that signal can come in.

If there is any way to get line-of-sight connection pursue it !
If not sometimes you can get usable connection.
Depending on the type of yagi , and of course types of the buildings. I had cases with 16dB yagi and 60mW client to successfully connect to 15dB omni and 200mW server @ 2Mbps.
The more the building contain moisture the greater attenuance.
If you can get signal better than -70 , you can use connection while for best results you need reception signal better than -60 on both client and server.
Using the modified 1,3M satelite dish and using bi-quad feed you can get up to 5 Km connection @ 2.4 GHz
Using the same equipment with 100mW @5.2 GHz you can get point to point connections up to 58 Km (tested)
