They work by reamplying
It sounds high tech and impresses nubes
You have to have the same brand as the router 
Generally they do not work  - simple as that
What you can do 
-  improve the position of your computer 
   closer to the signals and not blocked
- build an antenna 
  antennas work by focusing the signal
  you can make a focusing antenna with tin foil


You can build antennas such as cantennas
but you have to have special connectors and there is signal strength loss over any length of wire


The easiest antenna to build and use are of the shelf usb wi fi adapter antennas


use a generic usb network adapter ( zyadas chipset)
not a linksys or dlink ( horrible)  usb adaper
12 inch metal bowl
cork or pop bottle top
drill a hole into that
duct tape or whatever
The  antenna on the adapter sits 7 inches from the base
You can use larger bowls or satellite dishes - primestar for example
It is trial and error
The key thing is that you have to use the software that comes with the card
The windows wireless utility does not know what to make of the signal - it is low power but very functional
Install the software that comes with the card and disable the windows wireless utility - &quot; use windows ...&quot;
and in services.msc
You use ordinary ( cheap) usb connectors and extensions
You can go a fair distance without signal loss and at the worst you can use a Powered usb hub to extend the range ( powered hub not passive)
If the adapter is outside fall humidity can cause problems</description>

		<description>Get a USB wifi adapter and mount it in a dish.  A friend of mine did this with two dishes (made from metal chip [USA-fry] strainers) and was able to send and receive over a distance of 500 meters.  You should be able to get enough gain from one dish by pointing the dish in the right direction and playing with the exact position of the aerial in the dish.</description>
