I’m using a wireless network, but the router will only reach part of my house. So I’m trying to use my laptop as a signal booster, by connecting to the internet in the place where it works, and then creating an ‘ad hoc’ network, so others can share my internet connection. Will this work? Every time i’ve tried it so far it disconnects from the normal connection when I create the ad hoc one.

That won’t work. You could probably get a wifi repeater. That should theoretically work.
